I'm lucky enough to be able to take part of the towpath on my commute to work. According to "Take Your Bike - Family Rides in the Rochester Area," Expanded Edition, page 228: "Officially called the Erie Canalway Trail but more commonly known as the towpath, this trail stretches from Palmyra west to Lockport along the Erie Canal. It covers 85 miles and passes four working locks and 16 lift-bridges along its route." The book details 42 trails in the area. And it's loaded with local history and trivia. Definitely worth <a href="http://www.rochester.lib.ny.us:2080/cgi-bin/cw_cgi?5000+REDIRX+doSearch_720_w_Take%20your%20bike!%20:%20family%20rides%20in%20the%20Rochester" rel="nofollow">checking out from the library</a>, borrowing from me, or buying.
