Six years ago, I was driving around Rochester with my wife and grandparents, giving my grandparents a tour of the city. As we came to an intersection, we saw a little girl on a bike get hit by a car, which sped away without stopping. The girl was thrown to the street, bleeding. A guy coming out of a convenience store hopped in his car and flew off after the hit-and-run driver. I called 911 and asked for an ambulance. Then I hopped out of the car and ran over to the little girl and her mother, who had been riding behind her on her own bike. I said I had called an ambulance and asked if there was anything else I could do.
She said her son was at home, just up the street, and she asked if I would go get him and bring him to her. I agreed and she called him to let him know I was coming. I walked up the street, retrieved her son and headed back to the intersection. By this time, an ambulance had arrived. After delivering her son, I waited for a few more minutes to make sure everything was under control, then left with my family.
Fast-forward six years.
I asked Julie White to contribute an essay to RocBike.com. She sent it to me last night. About halfway through, I read this:
Finally, my ten-year-old daughter was clipped by a hit-and-run driver, a half-block from home. (The police found the sixteen-year old driver a few blocks away, unlicensed and driving an uninsured and unregistered car.) I was biking with her at the time, and told her that it was safe to turn left. I didn’t see the driver, probably due to a combination of a jog in the road and the speed at which she was traveling. It was literally as though she came out of nowhere. My daughter was thrown off the bike. She was wearing a helmet, and after a few hours in the emergency room and a couple of days of R and R, she was fine.
I felt the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Could it be that it was Julie and her daughter on that day in 2001? A quick e-mail to Julie confirmed it. It was her daughter who was struck by the car. She’s happy and healthy now, as you can see:
Small world, ain’t it?
