I saw it! I saw it!

My wife and I just finished watching Breaking Away. Fabulous! I’m not ashamed to say I was on the edge of the … er … couch during the final race. Most of the movie isn’t actually about cycling, except tangentially. It’s about four friends in Bloomington, Indiana, who’ve made a pact to stick together. They’re out of work, out of school, and in search of a good time, a good purpose, and the occasional smooch or fisticuffs.

Dennis Quaid shows off his 1% body fat throughout the film, and I really enjoyed Dennis Christopher, who plays the main character, Dave. I’d never heard of him before, although IMDB tells me he was also in Chariots of Fire. And he’s had a guest slot in just about every TV show every made, including NYPD Blue, Deep Space Nine, Trapper John, M.D., Moonlighting, Roswell, Crossing Jordan … and on and on and on.

The movie was nominated for five Oscars in 1980: Best Supporting Actress (Barbara Barrie), Best Director (Peter Yates), Best Score (Patrick Williams), Best Picture, and Best Screenplay (Steve Tesich — he won). It also won a Golden Globe for Best Picture and several other awards. It’s easy to see why.

Now I can wear my Walz cap with pride!
