Elden “The Fat Cyclist” Nelson recently signed on with BikeRadar.com. Here’s his first column for the site. It’s about creating a point system for passing other cyclists on the road.

Right after reading this column, I was riding home from a meeting. I was in my work clothes, going uphill behind a cyclist on a much more expensive bike. He was also younger and in a lot better shape. And I was catching up to him with no problem, waiting for my moment to pass. We came to a traffic light, though, and he passed the line of stopped cars on the right to get out in front at the light. I waited in line, so I fell a ways behind.

Machismo alert! As soon as the light changed and I crossed through the intersection, I moved over onto the shoulder and picked up the pace. I was rapidly closing ground again, getting ready to pass and earn my points. Glorious day! And then, suddenly–

THUNK!

My Topeak under-seat bag shot out behind me and landed in the street about 50 feet back. In it was my Palm Pilot, cell phone and wallet. It landed right in front of a Cadillac, which managed to swerve to avoid crushing all my gear. So did the truck and SUV that were behind the Cadillac. I pulled over onto the grass and ran back to retrieve my bag. I hadn’t clipped it in all the way when I put it under the seat after the meeting.

Fatty doesn’t have a point value for being that much of an idiot. Maybe -50?
