I was sitting in a coffee shop downtown today (WANKER ALERT!) within sight of the rack to which my bike and three others were locked. As I was looking out the window, I noticed a woman, probably a college student, go out to her bike. Next to her bike was an old, small, green bike with a very lived-on leather saddle. The woman spent several minutes tearing slots in a piece of paper to make a little ring. She wrote a note on the ring and put it on the handlebars of the green bike. Then she rode off.
A stronger person than I might have been able to resist this tiny mystery, but I didn’t have the fortitude. And here’s where it gets ridiculous. There was another guy sitting near the window and looking out onto the same sidewalk. So I took something out of my bike trunk and dropped it on the ground. While picking it up, I was able to read the note. It said:
Who’s riding Little Green? I love this bike! Love, — (I’ve removed her name.)
Gotta say, that’s one of those moments that gives you hope for the future of the human race. Taking a second to brighten someone’s day with no hope of return or thanks. Way to go!
