A couple days ago, I was riding down narrow, twisty, turny Park Avenue in Rochester behind another cyclist. As we came around a corner, the guy in front of me was nearly doored, but in a novel way. An SUV stopped suddenly in front of him in the middle of the street. Right here:

To avoid the car, the cyclist swerved to the right around the car. At that exact same moment, a woman on the passenger side threw open her door and stepped out into the street. The cyclist narrowly avoided her and the door and kept going. A few seconds later, the SUV nearly whacked the guy again, this time from behind as the SUV turned into a parking lot.

I rode up next to the guy and said, “I’ve never seen anyone almost get doored on the right side of a car before.” He looked over in terror and nodded quickly. It was then I realized that he was wearing headphones and couldn’t hear a word I was saying. He was probably completely oblivious to his second near-hit with the SUV. (And, of course, he wasn’t wearing a helmet.)

Apropos of this story, I saw these two images on gwadzilla yesterday:

And then there’s this thought from the blog Keep It Street Level.
