I could be wrong about this, but I’m pretty sure that the Flower City has an actual bike culture. From Critical Mass to the TNUA rides to last night’s Halloween cruise, cyclists are everywhere. Throw in the Rochester Criterium and the recent Cobbs Hill Cyclocross and other regional races, and I’d go so far as to say cycling is booming.

The other day, I pulled up to the light at Dartmouth and Monroe with four other cyclists. Five cyclists waiting for a light in Rochester! What is this, Denmark? I see cyclists every single day on my commute, and several other families now commute by bike to my son’s school several days a week.

Yesterday, the mayor said he wants to see bike lanes downtown. Hey buddy, why don’t you move to Eugene? (Better yet, why don’t I?)

RocBike.com, our little internet venture, is drawing many hundreds of visitors a day — nearly 1,000 on some days. Our new podcast, The RocBike Review, is already attracting hundreds of dowloads per show, and we’re only on show #3.

All in all, it’s a good time to be a cyclist in Rochester. The cycling community is strong and growing. More folks are turning to their bikes and leaving their cars at home. And more cyclists are spending time together networking, doing advocacy … and just riding.
