It really is amazing how bikes can change your life. I've been riding bikes for about 15 years now and I know my life would be much different (and worse) had I not taken up the biking obsession.

the short answers:

• I haven't spent money on gas or other car related expenses in over a year, besides chipping in for gas on long road trips with buddies. (I've obviously put money towards bikes, but that is negligible compared to the cost of a car)
• I've lost over 25 pounds and several inches since I started riding every day this last spring.
• I generally feel better, more energy, less stress.
• I've made new friends and grown closer to friends I already had, based on our shared love of bikes.
• I spend way less time indoors (on the computer) if I can help it.

I could go way more into detail about how bicycles have changed my life, but those are the big things. I can't think of any negative effects of my bike love, other than maybe annoying my friends and co-workers by constantly wanting to talk about bikes.

Because of my disabilities and limited income (my bike cost all of $250 and that's the best I can afford) I can't even begin to approach the biking lifestyle discussed here.

Nonetheless I am a huge bike enthusiast and have found regular riding to benefit me in numerous ways, including reducing my pain and fatigue levels.

Others disabled by chronic pain might be interested in the biking entries I collected from my weblog, Random Acts of Love, October 2005-January 2006.

Since I'm now living on the other side of town, I can't do Cobbs Hill anymore, at least not riding directly from my house. I have taken to riding over to Mt. Hope Cemetery instead. I love hills.

The jazz festival week looks like a great time for riding the Erie Canal.
Brandon and I are already discussing the week and time frame. It's doesn't look good for doing the whole thing. We only have 5 or 6 days to ride and two for travel.

I'm thinking Buffalo to someplace before Albany. What would you recommend?

Think of how different our city streets would feel if everyone who was able bodied and lived less than 2 miles from work, biked instead of driving!

Wow, great posts from both you and Julie. I was just logging on to brag about my Down Low Glow some more, but I'll wait for a lower-traffic night!

Now I can quote you as saying "<i>Breaking Away</i>, which . . . sucked." That movie has one of the most jarring final shots in movie history - the dad does a double-take and it freezes on his horribly contorted face. Where's the Breaking Away for today's generation?
