• Interestingly, I disagree with both linked articles about paying.

  In Chicago, additional laws and fines aren’t what are needed. There are plenty of unenforced laws already on the books to keep motorists and cyclists safe from each other. We don’t need more. But it’s a mayor’s job to grandstand and legislators’ jobs to legislate lest we taxpayers begin to wonder why we’re paying them.

  In Sydney, they’re voicing what I hear all the time from motorists–that cyclists need to pay their fair share of road use taxes. Setting aside all the arguments about gas taxes and DMV fees going into the general fund, the using bond issues to pay for roads, I’ll gladly pay bike registration and use fees–as soon as pedestrians are required to do the same. A tollbooth on every sidewalk, that’s what I say!
