A step forward for the rail trail

Tuesday, July 08LENOX — The Berkshires’ top planning group says a segment of the proposed countywide bicycle trail in Lenox has been endorsed by the Berkshire Metropolitan Planning Organization — a move that could pave the way for the $1.2 million needed to build it.
The Berkshire Metropolitan Planning Organization — a group of state and local officials which reviews the merits of various county projects for federal funding — is expected to give the project final approval at its July 16 meeting, according to the Berkshire Regional Planning Commission, or BRPC.
Christine Neumann, a BRPC transportation planner, said the $1.2 million will be included in the county’s Transportation Improvement Program funding request for fiscal 2009. The federal fiscal year begins in October.
