Your details about the oversized luggage space for bicycles on the Downeaster train between Boston and Portland has helped me tremendously. I've been planning a trip from Phila to Portland with daughter and bikes and was told by several people that Amtrak did not provide baggage service between Boston and Portland. A frame builder here in Phila has sent bikes up to Maine by Greyhound Package Express because that's what he has been told by Amtrak too. Anyway I called Amtrak (the 1800 #) to learn more about this service. The Amtrak rep. told me that all I have to do is make a reservation for the bikes (by calling the 800 number) and then paying a $5 fee. So easy! (I just have to remember that we get off at Back Bay and get ourselves over to the North Station.

Thanks again for posting the information. As a transit/bike/ped advocate I'm interested in collecting this information and seeing that it gets properly posted for other customers.

Very cool, Jack. RocBike started with your cycling journals, and it's wonderful to have another one.

My Flanders family ancestors lived in the southern Quebec town of Barnston from the late 1700s until the middle 1800s. From the maps I've looked at, Barnston doesn't really exist as a town anymore, but has been subsumed into the surrounding towns.
