I didn't know that you followed professional racing and knew the history so well. Someday I will ride past the 3007 ft sign and make it to the top and I'll think of you. I think you'd really enjoy the ride up Mt. Constitution on Orcas Island in Washington state. It's more of the classic twisting ascent with turns one on top of the other like the Alpe de Huez.
