I cannot believe people would go into your garage while you were there and steal something. That horrifies me.

So sad about the bike （；_・）

I suggest checking out our local Craigslist from time to time for some amazing deals. To bad Joey's not still in town to buy stuff off of Craigslist on our behalf!

Getting your bike stolen really sucks. It sounds like you've been marked. My neighbor's yard barn kept getting broken into. So, he put a sign on the door that says "Smiile! You're on camera." No more break ins. Not sure if he ever really put the camera on the barn or not. He was pretty cagey about answering that question.

I like the idea of the bolt in the floor.

I don't have any suggestions for you. Except there are lots of bikes in that range.

Good luck!

Advice for locking it up: Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit 5' chain lock. Lock both bikes together to something secure in the garage. I'd give advice as to what exactly but I don't know your garage. I'm sure you can find something. I say kryptonite because they have the theft insurance (one bike per lock though) so save receipts for the new bikes.
As for new bikes: I have a Specialized Rockhopper frame, cranks, pedals, chain, and rear derailuer that I saved from being thrown out. I can't use it, and it was too good to let it be thrown away (it was stripped of almost everything in front of my building, and my landlord was throwing it out). Not sure if this helps you at all, but if anyone wants to build up a new bike it's theirs for the asking.

To Jason...I guess I should have kept the rooster.

Smudgemo--interesting advice...I will think about that...

Rudy--you might be the only person besides me that thinks my bike's beautiful...thanks!

Another idea I had was to lock each bike to its own back wheel, then lock the 2 bikes together (all with U-locks). Thieves would literally have to hoist both bikes out...any thoughts on that idea?

That is a beautiful bike and a horrible loss. Reminds me of the only bike I ever had stolen from me. I was 13 and in the backyard of my parent's house. I leaped off my one-week-old bike to run inside for water. I dawdled around the TV, my dad, watching the TV, said, you should put your bike in the garage if you're done, I went out to do this and it was gone. I came back, "Ha ha, where's my bike, Dad?" His incredulous look told me everything. It was gone. I've never dawdled or assumed anything since then when it comes to the security of my bike.

My advice is to borrow or rent a hammer-drill to drill a 1/2" hole in the cement floor of your garage (near the wall.) They are only a little larger than a normal drill, but use special bits that hammer up and down while drilling. Vacuum out the hole, and fill it with a sturdy epoxy and an eye-bolt from the hardware store. Once hardened, you can loop a cable through it and around your bike frames (only one lock required.)
This is obviously not as solid as a U-lock and a rack, but it ought to stop the casual thief. And being near the wall means you won't trip over it when it isn't being used. Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry, Julie! That really, really stinks.

Sigh.

P.S. -- Maybe you need to train some guard chickens.
