Can you, maybe, explain how they came to the conclusion that riding your bike into oncoming traffic is less dangerous?

Because in America, according to law, bicycles are vehicles just like cars. If you drove a car into oncoming traffic, you'd have a problem. You ride WITH traffic because you ARE traffic.

To be honest, your lane positions (plural) sound dangerous to me. Weaving back and forth in the road, while headed into traffic, is probably exactly what you shouldn't be doing.

In Europe they come to the conclusion that riding your bike against traffic or up an one way road is less dangerous. As a result since 20 years Euroean governments started putting in bike lanes which go up a one way road. I personally find it save as wel: First you can see the cars coming towards you. I personally ride more in the middle if I see a car coming to make sure I will be seen just in case the drive is on the cell phone and then go on the side again once I notice the drive has seen me.
