In 2009 I am planning to teach how to plan a commuting route and how to equip you and your bicycle for the commute. It will be offered to RBC members in May. I am working on offering it to the general public.

Effective Cycling Road I takes about 20 hours of class/road time. No plans to teach it. I do have a book that I can loan to you that covers the material. RBC gives Street Smarts by John S. Allen to all members when joining.

My home address is rdscomm@rochester.rr.com.

I definitely agree about the inexperience of the cyclist...I just think using this whole thing as an example of zero tolerance is pretty ridiculous, and portraying the cyclist as a criminal really detrimental to any meaningful discussion about crime and any positive interaction between cyclists and motorists.

I would love to take an effective cycling class...will you be offering one any time soon?

and yes, indeed, Rochester is a small town in many ways and I look forward to meeting you in person!

Julie,

I don't want to discourage you in any way not to send the letter to Channel 10.

My experience of 30+ years of urban cycling, and being an Effective Cycling Instructor, I saw an inexperienced cyclist, who I believe, put himself in harms way.

I think the reporter could have found a better example of Zero Tolerance. That was probable the only one they could get on video.

If letters will get Channel 10 to do a more meaningful story about bicycling that is good.

Some day we will meet on the open road.

Richard.

You are probably right, Richard, although I couldn't see that from the video.

I have to say, like many who commented on Paul Dorn's post, that the whole thing looked like a set-up to me. How else would they get such good footage?

I decided not to address that in my letter, so as to just focus on the other issues.

Sorry Julie,

The officer did look back or else he would have hit the cyclist. The officer stopped not the cyclist.

See my take on the footage in the comments section of the story reported by Jason.
