No spare bike? Might as well keep a beater around for such an event, my ex's rusty old schwinn co-ed 3-speed saved my ass when I needed to get to work last summer when my regular commuter bit the dust. Now I have at least a dozen extra bikes to ride to work. Never worried about not getting there.
