Really good article on studded tires for the winter over on Cyclelicious. I have been indecisive about studded tires. I wanted to see how bad it would be without them. But maybe, given the way people around here drive, it’s better to be safe than dead.

I bought studded snow tires last winter and they were worth every penny. I bought the Nokian Extreme 294s. I felt that it made commuting around town safer and it was a blast bombing around on the x-country and snowmobile trails.

second the studded tires. especially here in the northeast with the ice under the snow. just be prepared for sticker shock when you price them!

I’ve been using Nokian Extremes for 2 years. Excellent grip in all conditions. I ride them in up to 4 inches of snow and still get around town no problem. I think it would be insane not to use them. (1 spill a few winters back convinced me of that real quick!)
