just found this post via rarestuff. Studded tires are also great for riding on frozen lakes. I've got Kenda Klondikes and have ridden a couple of times on the frozen southern end of Cayuga Lake this past week, they really are great, I felt perfectly comfortable going as fast as 16-17mph. Had to be careful on turns but going straight the studs rocked.

I use my bike with studs for my commute, year-round commuting, including coming down south hill in Ithaca, without them I often would decide to take the bus rather than bike, but I haven't missed a bike commuting day all winter with them since I got them last year.

My old pal Hoss shared something on Facebook:

“You wondered about studded shoes for ice-walking. I’ve had lots of luck with these things, called “Stabilicers”:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001B98GXW
Whatever you do, don’t get the kind without straps that go over your feet. I tried those, and inevitably they got yanked off my feet in deep snow. The Stabilicers also use plain old screws as studs, so you can easily replace them as needed.”

"Those knobs do nothing to grip onto the ice."
No kidding... ha haha.

Thanks for the details. Also, thanks for the pics of your tires. It's one of those things nobody ever includes but, as it turns out, is incredibly helpful.
