A friendly wave or a "Hi Mom" is usually pretty effective at irritating the driver even more. They are only doing it to get a reaction, so if they don't see you get pissed off, then it only makes tham more frustrated.

For what it’s worth…I’ve found that looking squarely at the a-hole and laughing loud and long is far more effective than curses, birds or violence…had one jerk so frustrated that his air horn elicited my laughing at him he gave me the bird for good measure. Equally effective on politicians too…though, come to think of it…that’s being a bit redundant.

Yes, 'tis the season for harassment of cyclists! I went on a nice ride yesterday to Charlotte and came back by way of Durand Eastman Park and the Lake Ontario shoreline. Beautiful! And such deep blue waters! But, heading south on Culver Road, I was startled by a male adolescent in an SUV who apparently took the warm weather and open windows as an invitation to yell at me while passing. I bobbled a little but got back on track. These mini-machos never consider what kinds of accidents they might cause. Could be worse, though: a couple of times in the past, I've been given similar treatment with one of those ear-shattering airhorns. Anybody got a suggestion on how to respond? I mean, any response that doesn't involve firearms, waterboarding or boiling oil?

I was told "get a car Loser" the other day by a teenager in the back of her dads 87 ford taurus. I laughed when I pulled up next to them at the next light. My bike is more than likely worth more than the car they where in. ( and my own for that matter )

I only have 1 question. Where you riding on the sidewalk, or the road? I believe and I could be wrong about this, But I thought the sidewalk is for pedestrians. the road is for any powered vehicle. including us.

i also thought that our right to the road was why we have critical mass. Otherwise we would have a "sidewalk" critical mass.

like I said, I could be wrong...or not.

Cool your back on the bike. I had a issue last week where some kid shouted something at me as I rode by which sounded like " BIkeFag". I was just gonna ride away but it bothered me so I turned around and said " Did you say something to me"?...He studdered " Um...no...man". I said " that's what I thought" and rode off. Kids got no respect.

I probably would have flipped the bird... kudos to you for showing restraint. Karma will get him back ;) As for the others who "crossed your path" in a postive way, kudos to them. All and all, a nice day for a bike ride.

Awesome. Way to get back on the bike. However, I have concern that Tanya's rebel "talking back...hunting down bike thiefs" has worn off on you!
