Even then, the figure doesn&#039;t reflect differences in the number of cyclists in each state. For instance, Oregon has more fatalities per million population than New York. I&#039;d be surprised if that wasn&#039;t partly the result of the large number of cyclists in places like Portland.

In other words, taken by itself this figure doesn&#039;t tell you much. It would probably be useful for year-to-year comparisons. Nationwide, bicyclist fatalities went down from 772 in 2006 to 698 in 2007. Sounds like good news to me (if it&#039;s not a fluke).</description>
