The trucks and the board itself are what cause the most damage, being used in most grinds, as well as rubbing whatever on the curb to make it slide better. But I've never really had any issue with skate-boarders and all this. Aggro rollerblades can be just as bad as skate-boards for damage. But at the same time, I so want to modify my extra skates to try some stairs and rails :)

Which bridge is the issue you're talking about? I ride under the Ford Street bridge regularly, and have never had an issue there. Occasionally the people playing craps on the trail near the apartments there are a problem (I've ridden through the middle of a couple games, but I've made sure to not run over the dice themselves!), but even they hop out of the way sometimes. I don't bike under any other bridges personally.

Softer wheels are slower or don't slide as well. I think part of the skate board noise is really from the board itself, echoing the wheel noise back off the pavement. Roller blades seems quiet by comparison even though they are almost the same thing. As far as the less destructive part goes, it's the metal "trucks" that connect the wheels to the board that are the damaging part (or atleast leave the silver stripes on the curbs)

Some jerks occasionally hang out under the Ford St. bridge on the east side, as well. I wish the authorities would put some decent lights there to make the underpass less intimidating to some trail users. And we need a real fair-housing campaign to help the homeless folks who sometimes seek shelter there. While I'm on the topic of underpass hanger-outers: why can't skateboarders ride on softer/quieter and less destructive wheels?

Yep...you know, it wouldn't be that much out of the way to go on the other side of the river, that's true. I'm just feeling stubborn. I'll probably take this route a couple more times and see how it feels...

Was this the underpass for the Freddie-Sue bridge? I've seen a ton of people hanging out there, but I could always take the other path under the bridge to avoid them.
