Yeah, I'm pretty sure the vampire/chupacabra stats. are top secret!

Plus, I'm pretty sure I could outbike anyone on foot...at least that's what I tell myself...

I don't think so. I rode it last night and decided that I felt safer than riding on 31 in heavy traffic.

Statistically how many cyclists are assaulted vs. hit by cars? I'm going to bet that the assault numbers are tiny by comparison.

I don't know the vampire/chupacabra attack statistics. I think the government does not release those.

Funny that you brought this up. I was just saying to myself, "There's no reason I can't ride on the canal path at 5 or 6:00 at night." Hmmm, am I wrong?

I confess that I also have these fears. I think there is a chupacabra on a dark road near my house. I'm pretty sure I should be more scared of drunk dudes in pick-up trucks before I worry about pedestrian assailants and zombies but I'm a bit of a crazy.

I'm scared of the dark, too! My fears are wacky. For example, on a deserted path I'll know that I'm fast enough to escape any random assailant, but I'm not fast enough to escape - a vampire! Also, the fog over the lake can look pretty ghostly... I am not making this shit up. This is my thought process sometimes on dark winter night rides. And now you know way too much about me ;) I really have no advice, just felt like commiserating.

Actually I agree with that. I feel much safer in rotten weather and in the morning in general.

There might be some good logic behind having greater concern about safety in the evening dark versus the morning dark. I'm convinced (without scrutinizing any real data, mind you) that mayhem makers are more 'night folk' than 'morning folk'.

I also think the baddies are 'fair weather folk'. I always feel safer riding nighttime in the dark when it's also crappy weather, less safe when conditions are warm and pleasant.

I rode the river and the canal last night in a cool rain. Hardly a soul to be seen, plenty of wet leaves, darting wildlife and autumn smells. Nice.
