Seconds after taking this photo to celebrate the new bike “sharrows” on New Scotland Ave. in Albany, NY, I was honked at and called a “cracker” by two young black women in an SUV. “Cracker”? Is this 1972?
There are also new sharrows on the part of Delaware Ave that is inside the city limits.

I just rode up and down New Scotland to pick up new brake pads for The Watson from Downtube, so I got to take advantage of the sharrows. My first thought was, wow, these are right in the middle of the lane. Some of them seem to be, seriously, right in the middle of traffic. Others, next to cars parked at the curb, were nicely out of the Door Prize Zone, but I was still riding on the right side of the sharrow markings. The other thing I noticed was that they are raised. You can feel it when you go over them. That’s kind of nice, but I worry they will be torn up when the snow plows come around.
The last thing I noticed was lots of cyclists riding “right.” There took advantage of the sharrows. They waited at red lights. It was really nice. Except for the one guy I saw riding on the sidewalk, on the wrong side of the street.

ethan, I also wonder how the maintenance will be handled. Crosswalks and other such markings get restriped on a less frequent schedule than lane markings. Did the City DPW put them in?
